FAQs
1. What is Diabetes Mellitus and how is it acquired?
Ans - A condition of high levels of glucose in the blood is called diabetes. It is the outcome of a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, family history, etc. The most common types of diabetes are:
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus - genetically acquired
Type II Diabetes Mellitus - develops over a lifetime
Prediabetes - a condition of high sugar level but not as in Type 2 diabetes
Gestational diabetes - a condition of high blood sugar levels during pregnancy
2. What are the common symptoms of Diabetes mellitus?
Ans - Increased thirst, Extreme hunger, Unexplained weight loss, Frequent urination, Fatigue and Irritability, Slow wound healing, Frequent infections, Tingling sensation in extremities, Dry and itchy skin, and Blurry eyesight are some of the symptoms that are indicative of Diabetes Mellitus.
3. Am I at a risk of developing Diabetes?
Ans - Generally, if you are Overweight, Physically inactive, Have High Blood Pressure, Low levels of HDL, Increased lipid levels in the blood, are above 45 years of age, and have had gestational diabetes in the past then you are at a higher risk of developing diabetes.
4. What are healthy blood sugar levels?
Ans - Blood sugar levels of less than 140 mg/dL are considered normal. Levels of 200 mg/dL and above indicate Diabetes and levels between 140 - 199 mg/dL are indicative of prediabetes.
5. Do I need to take insulin if I have type 2 diabetes?
Ans - Insulin is a key player in managing type 2 Diabetes. Insulin is secreted by the beta cells (a type of islet cell) of the pancreas. HIGH blood glucose is a stimulus for insulin secretion. The amount of insulin secreted into the blood increases as the blood glucose rises and as blood glucose falls, the amount of insulin secreted by the pancreatic islets goes down. Hence in cases of uncontrolled diabetes, insulin dependency serves the purpose of maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.
6. How do I know if I have diabetes?
Ans - If you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, Blood tests and Urine analysis can be done to rule out diabetes. To confirm whether you are diabetic or Prediabetic, conduct a Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test. HbA1C level of 6.5 percent or higher indicates that you are diabetic. Whereas levels between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicate prediabetes. Levels below 5.7 are considered normal. Diabetes can also be diagnosed using Urine analysis, Fasting blood glucose test, Random Blood Glucose test (using glucometer), and oral glucose tolerance test.

8. Does obesity leads to diabetes?
Ans - Being overweight or obese increases the chances of developing type 2 diabetes. In this condition, the body makes enough insulin but the cells in the body become resistant to the action of insulin. This resistance towards insulin causes excessive accumulation of fats which is an etiological factor for hyperlipidemia that is a characteristic of Type2 Diabetes Mellitus.
9. What are the complications of Diabetes?
Ans - Chronic Diabetic conditions can start affecting your kidney, heart, eyes, and nerves. Diabetic patients develop increased susceptibility toward Strokes, Ischemic heart disease, and Peripheral artery disease (in which narrowed arteries reduce the blood flow to your limbs). If any such patient suffers a wound or injury, the wound healing is delayed due to restricted blood flow which increases the possibility of the wound turning into infected gangrene. This condition if left untreated results in amputation of the affected part. Also, the chronic diabetic condition is responsible for decreased kidney function (Nephropathy) because, by the passage of time, kidneys lose their tendency to purify the blood and hence give rise to kidney-related disorders like nephritis, CKD, etc. Due to decreased kidney and cardiac output patients start suffering from Retinopathy (decreased vision), Myopathy (decreased muscle strength), and Neuropathy (nerve damage). Such patients also develop an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease and Depression.
10. How to manage Diabetes?
Ans - Eating low-fat and low-calorie foods, losing at least 5 - 7 % of body weight (if overweight), and being physically active for 150-200 minutes every week are some of the measures that may help you to lower the risk of diabetic complications.
